The mission of Curves Rock is to the change the world's ideals of beauty standards by Empowering women and young girls to Inspire to Aspire, Advocate for Self-Love and Create a new standard for Positive Body Images.
Since 2011, Curves Rock has been dedicated to Empowering Women and Young Girls through the art of Fashion/Beauty, Media and Entertainment! We invest our time and efforts in providing support, mentor-ship and resources to influence the lives of people in our community.
I am sure Ms. Carpenter never imagined that she would be walking the illuminated runway of Empowerment during Curves Rock Fashion Weekend. Tonya is a resident of a Traumatic Brain Injury program/facility.
We reached out to James Robinson, a Supervisor at a local Human Services Organization and asked him, if he knew of any plus size women that would benefit from being empowered at Curves Rock! The special thing is…Tonya never knew that by walking down that runway, she would also empower others! Can you imagine the courage that it took to walk down a runway, light shining brightly and over 300 people sitting on the sides of you, for the first time!
What I loved about Tonya was her willingness to learn, to endure and to face the challenge. Isn’t that something we all need to remind ourselves of daily. Tonya had no idea what she was in store for. She let us “beat” her face, change her clothes and then give her instructions. Tonya could not wait to walk the runway! She was backstage asking…when will it be my turn! And when her turn came… she walked the runway like a pro!

Historically, society has glorified the smaller figure and more recently, figures with smaller waist and wider hips/larger glutes. The glamorizing of a SPECIFIC look puts a tremendous amount of pressure on women/girls to strive to look like the women who are revered as "ideal".
This pressure combined with low self esteem and negative body image concerns are often noted as pre-requisites for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicidal ideations and a host of other mental health illnesses.
Curves Rock mission is to continue to create platforms and opportunities to present Positive Body Images to the world and to encourage women and young girls to love who they see in the mirror despite what society may glorify and accept as normal beauty and body standards.
